Kiehl's has teamed up with artist and activist Benjamin Von Wong to create a sculptural installation that will appear on the High Line in New York City from April 5th until April 17, before making its way to its forever home in Kearny Point, New Jersey.Timed to support the Earth Day Initiative, “Single-Use Reflections” invites viewers to pause for a moment of reflection on how both widespread systemic change and small individual lifestyle shifts, such as moving from single-use to refillable, can evoke hope and positively impact the planet’s future.

The Concept

This art installation was inspired by the greek legend of the Hydra, which grows back another head for each one that you cut off — reminiscent of the single-use plastic waste problem.Large-scale mirrors featuring thought-provoking prompts protrude from the mountain of empties, beckoning passer-bys to contemplate how they too might advocate for change.Hidden within the installation is a keyhole where viewers can discover an old-school apocathery - reminiscent of a time before plastic was invented. For their part, Kiehl’s, the sponsor of this project, has committed to making single-use plastic a thing of the past, by designing 100 percent of its products to be reused, refilled, or made of recycled materials by 2030.This art installation was fabricated by Brooklyn Based Fabrication studio SFDS and engineered by Theta Consulting.

About The Plastics

To build this art installation, we enlisted the help of the Sustainable Fashion Community Collective and Kiehl's Recycle and Be Rewarded program to collect over 3 tons of non food-based household plastics.Over the course of three months, hundreds of volunteers helped us to collect, clean, organize and transform a mountain of single-use plastic into art advocating for change.
